WORLDS FIRST Military TANK BIATHLON helps improve Military Training

A tank is a large, heavily armoured vehicle with tracks and a large tank gun that is designed for front-line combat. Modern tanks are mobile land weapon platforms, mounting a large-calibre cannon in a rotating gun turret. They combine this with heavy vehicle armour which provides protection for the crew, the vehicle's weapons, and its propulsion systems, and operational mobility, due to its use of tracks rather than wheels, which allows the tank to move over rugged terrain and be positioned on the battlefield in advantageous locations. These features enable the tank to perform well in a tactical situation: the combination of powerful weapons fire from their tank gun and their ability to resist enemy fire means the tank can take hold of and control an area and prevent other enemy vehicles from advancing. In both offensive and defensive roles, they are powerful units able to perform key primary tasks[which?] required of armoured units on the battlefield.[1] The modern tank was the result of a century of development from the first primitive armoured vehicles, due to improvements in technology such as the internal combustion engine, which allowed the rapid movement of heavy armoured vehicles. As a result of these advances, tanks underwent tremendous shifts in capability during the World Wars of the 20th century.

Tanks in World War I were developed separately and simultaneously by Great Britain [2] and France as a means to break the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front. Their first use in combat was by the British Army in September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The name "tank" was adopted by the British during the early stages of their development, as a security measure to conceal their purpose (see etymology). While the French and British built thousands of tanks in WWI, Germany was unconvinced of the tank's potential, and built only twenty.

Tanks of the interwar period evolved into the much larger and more powerful designs of World War II. Important concepts of armoured warfare were developed; the Soviet Union launched the first mass tank/air attack at Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan) in August 1939,[3] which later resulted in the T-34, a predecessor of the main battle tank. Less than two weeks later, Germany began their large-scale armoured campaigns that would become known as blitzkrieg ("lightning war") – massed concentrations of tanks supported by motorised and mechanized infantry, artillery and air power designed to break through the enemy front and collapse enemy resistance.

The widespread introduction of high-explosive anti-tank warheads during the second half of WWII led to lightweight infantry-carried anti-tank weapons such as the Panzerfaust, which could destroy some types of tanks. Tanks in the Cold War were designed with these weapons in mind, and led to greatly improved armours during the 1960s, especially composite armour. Improved engines, transmissions and suspensions allowed tanks of this period to grow larger. Aspects of gun technology changed significantly as well, with advances in shell design and aiming technology.

During the Cold War, the main battle tank concept arose and became a key component of modern armies.[4] In the 21st century, with the increasing role of asymmetrical warfare and the end of the Cold War, that also contributed to the increase of cost-effective Russian anti-tank weapons worldwide, the importance of tanks has waned. Modern tanks seldom operate alone, as they are organized into combined arms units which involve the support of infantry, who may accompany the tanks in infantry fighting vehicles. They are also usually supported by reconnaissance or ground-attack aircraft.[5]

Many sources imply that Leonardo da Vinci and H.G. Wells in some way foresaw or "invented" the tank. However the human crew would not have enough power to move it over larger distance, and usage of animals was problematic in a space so confined.

Day 4 - biathlon - 2013 IPC Nordic World Cup (Canmore)

Russian athletes continued to show why they will be the ones to beat at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games by taking 15 out of 18 possible podium positions on the first day of biathlon competition at the IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup in Canmore, Canada.

After proving their metal in the cross country events earlier in the week, Russian athletes excelled in Saturday's (14 December) calm conditions to win gold in all six events in the short course biathlon.

In the first race of the day - the men's sitting 7.5km - the top three men all shot clean so the race came down to who had the fastest skis. Russia's Irek Zaripov (21:54.4) won the contest ahead of Japan's Kozo Kubo in second (22:03.3). Zaripov's teammate Aliaksandr Davidovich was third (22:13.2).

Kubo was satisfied with his silver medal performance.

"Canmore is a very good venue for competitions. Today's course was very high speed with not too many difficult sections," said Kubo who won two silver medals and a bronze at this year's World Championships in Sweden.

The women's sitting 6km was an all-Russian affair with thrillingly close finish. Aided by no missed shots, Marta Zaynullina (22:20.8) took gold fractionally ahead of Svetlana Konovalove (22:21.4). One dropped shot by Nadezda Andreeva (23:04.2) meant she could only finish third.

Russia took two podium places in both the men's and women's standing races.

Azat Karachurin (19:17.1) took gold win the men's 7.5km race, whilst his teammate Kirill Mikhaylow (19:56.4) won the bronze. Splitting them was Norway's Nils-Erik Ulset (19:47.0) who claimed silver.

In the women's 6km race, Russia's Alena Kaufman (18:26.3) took gold with no dropped shots ahead of teammate Natalia Bratiuk (19:05.1) who would have finished closer had she not dropped a shot. Bronze went to Japan's Momoko Dekijima (20.10.0).

In both the men's and women's VI category all six podium finishes went to Russia despite gusty winds making for tricky shooting conditions.

Nikolay Polukhin (19:34.9), a winner of four world titles earlier this year, took gold in the men's 7.5km. Despite missing one target, he still had enough quality to take gold ahead of Vladimir Uldaltcov (19:56.1) who was aided in securing silver by clean shooting. Stanislav Chokhlaev (20:22.2) relied on his skiing ability with three missed targets to grab the bronze.

There was a small shock in the women's 6.5km when nine-time world champion Mikhalina Lysova (19:16.7) could only manage silver despite shooting clean. Gold went to Iuliia Budaleeva (18:134.7) who missed one shot but still finished with the fastest time. Elena Remizova (20.45.3) relied on her skiing ability to land third place as her shooting was off today with five penalties.

Competition continues on Sunday with the middle distance biathlon events.

Day 5 - biathlon - 2013 IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup (Canmore)

Unseasonably warm and windy weather at the IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup in Canmore, Canada failed to stop Russian athletes winning gold in all six middle distance biathlon events on Sunday (15 December). For the second successive day, Russian athletes again won 15 out of a possible 18 medals, highlighting why they are expected to sweep the board in Nordic Skiing at March’s Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.Blustery conditions hampered the first two races of the day and as a result there were no clean shots by any of the competitors in the men’s 12.5km sitting race. At the end of five 2.5km laps, Russia's Roman Petushkov (40:57.3) was the overall winner despite three dropped shots. Japan's Kozo Kubo (41:07.9) repeated Saturday's silver medal finish whilst Russian teenager Grigory Murygin (41:36.1) took third. Kubo and Murygin both missed two shots each. The women’s 10km sitting race was also hampered by the wind, however three Russians still made the podium. Russia’s Marta Zaynullina (46:25.5) claimed her second victory in as many days after winning Saturday’s 6km event. In silver, 12 seconds behind, was Nadezda Andreeva (46:36.8) whilst Natalia Kocherova (47:13.0) took third, helped by the best shooting in the field.Russian 18 year old Aleksandr Iaremchuk (35:19.6) pulled off an upset in the men’s 12.5km standing event finishing ahead of home favourite Mark Arendz (35:27.0). Iaremchuk only dropped one shot to Arendz’s two and that proved the difference between the two athletes."I totally rushed the last shot. I started to get up before I had finished and that's what caused the miss. With the incredible field of athletes out here you have to shoot clean," said Arendz shortly after the race.Russia’s Azat Karachurin (36:02.0) was third with two dropped shots. The women’s 10km standing race saw all three medalists from Saturday’s 6km event also take the podium positions with the top two finishers swapping places. After finishing with a silver medal on Saturday, Russian Natalia Bratiuk (34:54.1) this time took gold, finishing ahead of teammate Alena Kaufman (34:56.4). The two had identical shooting records, dropping three shots in total, however it was Bratiuk who was marginally quicker over the longer distance. Bronze for the second successive day went to Japan’s Momoko Dekijima (35:33.9).As with Saturday’s short course races, the men’s and women’s visually impaired races were totally dominated by Russian athletes.Nickolay Polukhin and guide Andrey Tokarev (35:35.9) claimed their second gold in successive days in the men’s 12.5km race. The pair only left two targets standing and finished a minute ahead of second place Stanislav Chokhlaev and guide Maksim Pirogov (36:23.4) who left four targets up. Oleg Ponomarev and guide Andrei Romanov (37:04.9) missed three shots and finished third.Elena Remizova with guide Natalia Yakimova (34:47.5) overcame two missed shots with fast skiing to take first place in the women’s 10km event. Iuliia Budaleeva and guide Tatiana Maltseva (36:04.) shot clean to secure second place in 36:04.0 whilst Elvira Kalabina with guide Irina Sitnikova (38:38.6) were third and left one unanswered target. The IPC Nordic Skiing World Cup will conclude in Canmore on Tuesday (17 December) with the men’s and women’s long course biathlon races.Pictures of both competitions will be available on Flickr and video highlights will be available everyday here.Updates will also be posted to Twitter and Facebook. Results from both cross country and biathlon events will be available at

Game 2 - "A jet game" - 12:23

Game 3 - "Feraphic joins us for derps with his joystick and TrackIR" - 27:47

These are 3 of the 4 games I played with BriGuy in the new "Biathlon" event. Feraphic also joined for the last game we played. The text above this paragraph is the title of each game and when it starts in the video.

The "Biathlon" event is an Arcade event where both teams have the same but separate objectives (mostly going from one point to another) and the goal is to beat the other team at finishing the objectives. It makes for some interesting battles! The event does have the "title" of Winter Games, so maybe this is the start of a few events Gaijin is going to run related to the Winter Olympics.

Darya Domracheva wins third Olympic biathlon gold

Darya Domracheva of Belarus won her third gold medal of the Winter Olympics Monday with a victory in the women's 12.5-kilometer mass start race.

Domracheva became the first athlete at the Sochi Games with three golds and they have all come in individual races. She won the 10-kilometer pursuit race as well as the 15-kilometer competition earlier in the Olympics.

Belarus had just one gold to its credit from all previous Winter Games until Domracheva went to work on the biathlon course.

There were 29 competitors in Monday's race, which was able to get under way on schedule after the fog that had postponed the men's mass start race finally lifted.

All the contestants started at the same time and when the skiers had completed their first 2.5 kilometers and headed into the shooting range, Domracheva was a second behind sprint specialist Anastasiva Kuzmina of Slovakia.

Kuzmina won the individual sprint to open the biathlon events at the Olympics, but she faded Monday while missing five shots and finished 27th.

Domracheva shot cleanly in her first five attempts and quickly moved into the lead for good. Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic fell in behind Domracheva heading out of the first shooting station and they remained 1-2 all the way to the finish line.

Neither biathlete missed a shot through the first three rounds and both missed once in the fourth round, requiring them to ski a 150-meter penalty lap. With her lead having steadily grown through the race, Domracheva eventually finished 20.2 seconds in front of Soukalova.

The bronze medal went to Tiril Eckhoff of Norway, who crossed the line a second in front of Germany's Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle.

The men had been scheduled to compete in their 15-kilometer mass start race on Sunday, but that evening competition had to be postponed because of fog. When the contestants returned to the course early Monday to try again, the fog was still there -- reducing visibility to less than half the length of a football field.

The men's race was postponed again and will now be held, weather permitting, on Tuesday. Ole Einar Bjorndalen of Norway will make another try in that race to win a record 13th Olympic medal. France's Martin Fourcade will also attempt to match Domracheva with three gold medals from these Games.

Mixed relay biathlon Is new Olympic event here to stay

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games (French: Les XXIIes Jeux olympiques d'hiver), is a major international multi-sport event being held in Sochi, Russia in the tradition of the Winter Olympic Games.

Scheduled for 7--23 February 2014, opening rounds in certain events were held on the eve of the Opening Ceremony, 6 February 2014. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet Union was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

A total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines are being held during the Games. A number of new competitions—a total of 12 accounting for gender—are being held during the Games, including biathlon mixed relay, women's ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slopestyle, and snowboard parallel slalom. The events are being held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi's Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games' indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.

In preparation, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally budgeted at US$12 billion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over US$51 billion, surpassing the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the most expensive Olympics in history.

The lead-up to the 2014 Games was marked by major controversies, including allegations of corruption leading to the aforementioned cost overruns, concerns for the safety and human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) athletes and supporters during the Games due to the country's recent anti-LGBT policies. This led to ongoing Olympic protests of Russian anti-gay laws, protests by ethnic Circassian activists over the site of Sochi (the site of what they consider to be a genocide) and various security concerns over threats by jihadist groups tied to the insurgency in the North Caucasus.

Film clip of World War I-era tanks

The tank is the 20th century realization of an ancient concept: that of providing troops with mobile protection and firepower. The internal combustion engine, armour plate, and the continuous track were key innovations leading to the invention of the modern tank.

Armoured trains appeared in the mid-19th century, and various armoured steam- and petrol-engined vehicles were also proposed. The first armoured car was produced in Austria in 1904. However, all were restricted to rails or reasonably passable terrain. It was the development of a practical caterpillar track that provided the necessary independent, all-terrain mobility.

Many sources imply that Leonardo da Vinci and H.G. Wells in some way foresaw or "invented" the tank. Leonardo's late 15th century drawings of what some describe as a "tank" show a man-powered, wheeled vehicle with cannons all around it. However the human crew would not have enough power to move it over larger distance, and usage of animals was problematic in a space so confined.

Allianz has been a partner of the Paralympic Movement since 2006 and in 2011 became the first "International Partner" of the IPC (International Paralympic Committee) which includes local partnerships with various National Paralympic Committees.

The word "Paralympic" derives from the Greek preposition "para" (beside or alongside) and the word "Olympic". Its meaning is that Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements exist side-by-side. Today the Paralympic movement offers opportunities to visually impaired, amputees, persons with cerebral palsy and paraplegics elite athletes.

Men's / women's biathlon middle distance standing / visually impaired | Sochi 2014 Paralympics

Russia swept the podium in the men's 12.5km sitting biathlon on Tuesday (11 March) at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, as Roman Petushkov furthered his winning streak by taking his third gold in as many events.

Clocking in at 34:48.8, the 36-year-old has quickly become the host nation's face of Sochi 2014 after having entered these Games with eight world titles, but no Paralympic titles.

Petushkov's teammates, Alexey Bychenok (35:29.7) and Grigory Murygin (35:59.6), took silver and bronze to complete an all-Russian podium.

"Today I spoke to the guys and told them that we would share the podium," Petushkov said. "It was a joke, but now it's true.

"I don't think that the weather is bad. It's Russian weather, especially for biathlon. We are like soldiers and can race in any weather, it doesn't matter."

Germany's 22-year-old Anja Wicker won her first career Paralympic gold, taking first place in the women's 10km sitting biathlon in 32:54.4.

"We played some billiards yesterday to relax. Apparently, I wasn't too good at it so I saved that for today," Wicker said after the race.

"I need some time to realise what just happened. I kept looking at the results board in the stadium but I couldn't believe that it was my name up there in first position.

"I kept thinking there has to be someone else who will finish ahead of me. To be honest, I didn't even expect a medal today, let alone the golden one."

Russia's Svetlana Konovalova (33:36.7) picked up her third medal of Sochi 2014 and second silver, and Ukraine's Lyudmyla Pavlenko (34:22.6) took home the bronze. That left the race favourite, Ukraine's seven-time biathlon world champion Olena Iurkovksa (34:49.2), in fourth place.

The women's 10km standing title went to Russia's Alena Kaufman (29:57.1), who now has two golds in Sochi, while Ukraine's Oleksandara Kononova (30:33.7) took silver and another Russian, Natalia Bratiuk (30:57.6), finished in bronze-medal position.

"I can't believe I won," Kaufman said. "It's my second gold medal and it's great because it's a home Paralympic Games."

"I always feel doubt, but everybody tells me I can do it. I hope I will win gold in another race."

In the men's 12.5km standing, 18-year-old Azat Karachurin (29:30.0) pulled a surprise by winning gold ahead of Norway's three-time world champion Nils-Erik Ulset (30:24.6) and Canada's world champion Mark Arendz (30:31.0).

The host nation's Mikhalina Lysova (30:11.5), guided by Alexey Ivanov, picked up her second medal of the Games, taking gold in the women's 10km visually impaired biathlon ahead of teammate Iuliia Budaleeva (30:38.9). Ukraine's Oksana Shyshkova (35:01.4) grabbed her first Paralympic medal, taking the bronze.

In the day's final competition, Ukraine's Vitaliy Lukyanenko (31:04.0) raced to gold with guide Borys Babar in the men's 7.5km visually impaired event to increase his collection of Paralympic titles to three. Russia's Nikolay Polukhin took silver, with Belarus' Vasili Shaptsiaboi (31:59.0) grabbing the bronze.

Men's / women's biathlon long distance standing / visually impaired | Sochi 2014 Paralympics

Russia's Roman Petushkov continues to prove unstoppable in the Nordic skiing events at the Sochi 2014 Paralympics, winning his fifth gold medal of the Games in the men's 15km sitting biathlon on Friday (14 March).

The 36-year-old, named the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Athlete of the Month at least once each of the past two seasons, clocked in at 42:20.8, ahead of teammates Grigory Murygin (44:25.7) and Aleksandr Davidovich (44:46.2).

"Fans at the stadium shouted, 'Roman, we want a fifth gold medal.' That's why I had to take first place," Petushkov said. "My mental training is easy. I just tell myself, 'I must.'"

After racking up two Paralympic silvers already this week, Russia's Nikolay Polukhin (36:42.9) finally got his first Sochi 2014 gold in the men's 15km visually impaired biathlon with guide Andrey Tokarev with a time of 36:42.9. Ukrainians Anatolii Kovalevskyi (38:18.2) and Vitaliy Lukyanenko (38.21.6) finished with the silver and bronze, respectively.

"Yes, it finally happened - my first Paralympic individual gold medal," Polukhin said. "I'd promised four years ago in Vancouver that I would win Paralympic gold in the individual race in Sochi."

"My federation and trainers have been waiting for me to win a gold since 8 March, but there were some imperfections and mistakes. Today, I tried to do everything without them, to shoot restrained and in cold blood. Everything turned out as I wished."

Ukraine's Grygorii Vovchynskyi won gold in the men's 12.5km standing in a time of 37:41.1 to clinch his first medal of the Games, beating Norway's Nils-Erik Ulset (37:44.2) by just one-tenth of a second. Russia's top finisher in the event was Kirill Mikhaylov (37:45.6), who took the bronze.

Russian 24-year-old Svetlana Konovalova continued her Paralympic medal streak by winning the women's 12.5km sitting biathlon in 40:44.0 -- putting on a very impressive performance after finishing in seventh place in the event at the 2013 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships.

Germany's Anja Wicker (41:27.1) and Ukraine's Olena Iurkovska (41:30.8) completed the podium, finishing second and third.

There was more Russia and Ukraine dominance in the women's 12.5km standing biathlon, with Ukrainian Oleksandra Kononova grabbing gold in 40:30.6 ahead of two Russians -- Alena Kaufman (40:32.7) and Natalia Bratiuk (41:00.9).

Iuliia Budaleeva took the gold in the women's 12.5km visually impaired event in 35:25.9, defeating favourite and compatriot Mikhalina Lysova (37:21.0), who took silver. Ukraine's Oksana Shyshkova (37:48.8) finished in third place.

Russia: Russia banned from hosting IBU World Cup and Junior World Cup

The press-secretary of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) said that it is too early to say whether the measures taken by the International Biathlon Union (IBU) are dictated by politics or not, during an interview in Moscow, Thursday.

SOT, Konstantin Boytsov, Press-secretary of Russian Biathlon Union (Russian): "After the examination of the decision made by the International Biathlon Union (IBU), their executive board, the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU), came to the conclusion that in this situation, [given the] recently launched investigation, it will be appropriate to let the IBU decide the venue of the IBU World Cup stage and the Junior World Cup, which were initially to be held in Tyumen and Ostrov, in the Pskov region."

SOT, Konstantin Boytsov, Press-secretary of Russian Biathlon Union (Russian): "We are not having a dialogue with Richard McLaren. We are having a dialogue with the IBU. During today's executive board meeting, the IBU [discussed] a number of [matters] in which we plan to cooperate with them. We made ourselves familiar with the decision of the IBU and plan to cooperate with them during the investigation. Only when the results of this cooperation [will be announced], will we be able to say whether politics was involved or not."

Highlights Day 5 Biathlon long distance | IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships

The Ukrainian duo of Oleksandra Kononova and Ihor Reptyukh captured long distance biathlon golds at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Cable, Wisconsin, USA, on Friday (30 January).

Paralympic champion Kononova (38:21.4) stormed to victory over 12.5km, putting herself on top of the podium for an incredible fifth time in both cross-country and biathlon women’s standing events.

“[They] are two different sports so the preparation is different,” Kononova said.

“Before this biathlon [race] I was trying to calm down, to get the thoughts in order and prepare mentally for this race.”

Compatriot Liudmyla Liashenko (39:10.3) claimed silver. Finland’s Maija Jarvela (41:34.6) missed just one target on the day to take bronze.

Reptuykh (39:23.9) shot clean in the men’s 15km standing event to make it a double gold for Ukraine.

Russian Vladislav Lekomtcev (39:28.7) had his bid for a third biathlon gold medal at Cable 2015 dashed as he took silver. France’s Benjamin Daviet (39:42.0) shot perfectly to finish with the bronze.

Lekmotcev’s teammate Alexey Bychenok (46:31.2) returned to the top of the podium in the men’s sitting thanks to his sharp shooting. The USA's Andrew Soule (46:56.9) also came away perfect from the range, giving him silver for his fourth medal of Cable 2015.

“I don’t think I really came in here with any really expectations of specific place or performances,” Soule said.

“It was important to make sure I got all hits. There were only three cleans out here today and hitting a target in this long individual event is incredibly important.”

Russian Grigory Murygin (47:15.4) missed one shot on his third trip to the range, forcing him into bronze.

Russia charged to another podium sweep in the women’s event, with Marta Zaynullina (45:31.4) claiming her first gold to beat Paralympic champion teammate Svetlana Konovalova (45:51.8). Natalia Kocherova (45:53.0) took bronze to earn her first medal of the competition.

Important concepts of armoured warfare were developed; the Soviet Union launched the first mass tank/air attack at Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan) in August 1939,[3] which later resulted in the T-34, a predecessor of the main battle tank.
